Mantena is now starting to give the 25-year-old Airport Express Trains an interior “makeover.” Flytoget praises the collaboration with Mantena, which is crucial for meeting customer expectations.
– The work Mantena is starting now will help to extend the service life of the Type 71 trains. We will also have a more stable and reliable train, in addition to providing passengers with the impression of well-maintained and inviting trains. That is according to Knut Erik Kristiansen, Maintenance Manager at Flytoget.
New pipes, floors, and seats
The extensive work on the 15 train sets will take just over a year. It includes, among other things, replacing the air pipes in the floor and sealing the joints in the undercarriages, which are the spaces beneath the floor where the components are located.

– This upgrade will create better conditions for the components, thereby reducing errors, emphasizes the Maintenance Manager at Flytoget.
In addition, the flooring in all cars will be replaced. This will not only provide an aesthetic boost, but also have positive effects for both the environment and operations.
– The existing floors need to be polished regularly, and the cleaning process releases a significant amount of microplastics. The new coverings do not require polishing, making them better for the environment. Additionally, the new floor ensures that no water enters the undercarriage during cleaning, Kristiansen points out.
The seats, which have begun to show wear in the wood, will be restored to as-new condition through sanding and varnishing.
– We sent a couple of seats to Mantena at Grorud for them to experiment first. The result was excellent, so we want to refurbish all the seats. This will make the compartment appear new and fresh, says Kristiansen.
Maintenance is crucial for a good service
The Type 71 trains have been part of Flytoget since the first trip in 1998. Last year, Mantena gave these old workhorses an exterior upgrade, through extensive painting and wrapping work. Now it is the interior’s turn.

Kristiansen emphasizes that they are dependent on satisfied customers, and that a high standard is an important part of Flytoget’s brand.
– We are committed to providing a good service for our customers, and maintenance is therefore essential, the Maintenance Manager affirms.
He praises the collaboration with Mantena, which he describes as good and constructive.
– Together with Knut Høistad at Mantena, we have reviewed various solutions and opportunities, and together arrived at the final solution. This has been achieved through close and effective dialogue for over a year, says Kristiansen, and continues: Mantena has both broad expertise and capacity to accommodate us—whether in complex tasks or ongoing repairs. All inquiries are taken seriously, which we greatly appreciate.
Important for Mantena
Knut Høistad, Contract Manager at Mantena, is very pleased with the new job for Flytoget, which is a so-called change order under the existing agreement.
– This is a large project that means a lot to Mantena and the project improvement department at Grorud. We have an excellent cooperation with Flytoget, and look forward to doing even more for them going forward, concludes Høistad.
